The Philadelphia Phillies return to the field on Saturday in Arlington, turning to their ace –Zack Wheeler– looking to notch the first win of the 2023 regular season.  The Texas Rangers will counter with free agent acquisition Nathan Eovaldi

The Fightins hope to have short memories after blowing a 5-0 lead on Opening Day on their way to a horrific 11-7 loss to the Rangers.

Despite the loss, not all was bad for the Phillies.

Offensively, the Phils looked as advertised especially from the power department accounting for seven extra-base hits and seven runs on Thursday.  3B Alec Bohm was the star of the game for the Phils, the 26-year old went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs and was a single short of the cycle.  Trea Turner, J.T. Realmuto, Nick Castellanos, and Brandon Marsh joined the extra-base hit parade and 1B Darrick Hall was robbed of a late-inning home run.

First pitch is set for 4:05 PM/Eastern from GlobeLife Park.

The Philadelphia Phillies blew a 5-0 lead to the Texas Rangers enroute to a brutal 11-7 loss on Opening Day in Arlington, Texas. The loss marks the 10th consecutive game the Phils have lost to the Rangers dating back to 2014.

The Phillies jumped all over the Rangers’ new ace Jacob deGrom tagging him for six earned runs including SEVEN extra base hits in 3-2/3 innings.  Prior to this afternoon, deGrom had been nearly unhittable when facing the Phillies as a member of the New York Mets.

3B Alec Bohm came up a triple shy of the cycle going 3-for-4, with a HR, 2B, 2R, and 3 RBIs.  Trea Turner and Brandon Marsh each drove in a run off of deGrom. Turner added to the hurlers bad scoring on a 4th inning wild pitch.

The Phillies offense was on fire and handed Nola a 5-0 lead heading into the Rangers half of the 4th inning.

The Philadelphia Phillies begin the defense of their National League Pennant on Thursday afternoon in Arlington, Texas against the American League’s Texas Rangers in the first of a three-game set from GlobeLife Field.

The Phillies will send Aaron Nola to the mound for his sixth straight Opening Day start. Speaking of free agents, Trea Turner will make his Phillies regular season debut. The 29-year old signed an 11-year/$300MM in early December. Turner joins a potent lineup that includes Kyle Schwarber, 2022’s NL home run leader, and All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto.

Rhys Hoskins Set for Surgery on Opening Day

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins is set to undergo ACL reconstruction surgery on Thursday, the team announced.  Hoskins injured the knee attempting to make a play during a Grapefruit League game on March 23.  Recovery time for an ACL reconstruction is 6-to-12 months.

Hoskins, 30, has likely played his final games in Phillies pinstripes.  The Phils’ 5th round draft pick in 2014, Hoskins is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2023 season.  The team had made no attempts at extending the righty slugger prior to the injury. The Phillies are the only team Hoskins has played for.

Well, Scott Kingery won’t be making the Philadelphia Phillies Opening Day roster.  The Phils reassigned a slew of players including Kingery before Monday’s Grapefruit League game against Toronto.

Kingery slashed .340/.415/.447 with a homer, two stolen bases, and four RBIs in 47 Grapefruit League at-bats in a bid to make the Big Club as a bench piece.  The 28-year old former 2nd round draft pick showed versatility playing multiple positions for the Phils during the Clearwater season.

But alas it was not enough to rejoin the team.
