Who is Masataka Yoshida and Does He Make Sense for the Phillies?

Philadelphia Phillies fans are quickly becoming fans of Nippon Professional Baseball’s Orix Buffaloes.  The Osaka based club is home to outfielder Masataka Yoshida, Japan’s next big export to the United States.

The 29-year old slugger is the hottest name to come out of Japanese baseball since Shohei Ohtani in 2017. Yoshida, a self-professed Bryce Harper superfan, has asked Orix to be posted, or made available to the highest bidding MLB team. The move is likely to be confirmed in the next week or so according to MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi

The addition of Yoshida to the free agent class throws a massive wrinkle into an already interesting hot stove season.

But who is Japan’s next big star, how are the Phillies connected, and does it make sense?

The move allows the Phillies to pursue some big name free agents such as Trea Turner, Xander Bogaerts, or Dansby Swanson. Free agency begins at 5:00 PM/Eastern on Thursday.

Phillies Reportedly Linked to Free Agent Shortstops

It’s been a while for the Philadelphia Phillies, but the hot stove season comes quicker when you play this far into the postseason. Teams are able to have unofficial —let’s call it what it is, legal tampering— with potential free agents beginning now. Free agency official begins Thursday, November 10 at 5 PM/Eastern.

On that note, the Phillies are reportedly linked to a handful of major free agent shortstops as they look to improve the lineup.

Here’s the latest.

Rhys Hoskins Tops Phillies Arbitration Eligible Players

Like option eligible players, the Philadelphia Phillies only have a handful of arbitration eligible players heading into the 2022-23 MLB offseason. Players and the club must agree to a contract by January 13, 2023 or they will go to arbitration.  An arbitrator (duh) will hear the case from both sides and make a decision on 2023 salary.

Here are the Phils’ arbitration eligible players (2022 salary in parentheses).

  • 1B Rhys Hoskins ($7.7M)
  • P Jose Alvarado ($1.9M)
  • P Seranthony Dominguez ($725,000)
  • P Ranger Suarez ($730,000)
  • P Sam Coonrod ($717,500)
  • INF Yairo Munoz ($700,000)
  • INF Edmundo Sosa ($715,600)

The trio of Alvarado, Dominguez, and Suarez were a steal for the Phillies at their 2022 salaries.  The trio, along with Hoskins, will see a significant bump heading into the 2023 season.

How much? Let’s take a look.
