Jose Quintana and Miles Mikolas to Start Games 1 & 2 for St. Louis

St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol announced that Jose Quintana and Miles Mikolas will start the first two games of the NLWCS for the Cards. Game three, if necessary, is to be determined.

The news comes as a slight surprise. Many believe that veteran Adam Wainwright would get the nod in game one for the RedBirds. He will reportedly be available out of the bullpen.

Quintana, a trade deadline acquisition for St. Louis, faced the Phillies in July as a member of the Pirates. He went 5.2 innings allowing no runs on four hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. The 33-year old has been an asset for the Cards down the stretch going 3-2 with a 2.01 ERA, Ks, and a 1.117 WHIP.

Mikolas faced the Phils twice this season and had two drastically different outings. On July 1, he allowed four runs, two earned, in a 5-4 loss to the Fightin’s. Ten days later on July 11, he threw 7.1 innings of one run, five strikeout baseball in the Cards 6-1 win over the Phillies.

Both pitchers have postseason experience.

Quintana is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in postseason play. He appeared in four games, three starts, for the 2017 Chicago Cubs.

Mikolas is 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA in the postseason. He appeared in three games, two starts, for the 2019 Cardinals.

The first pitch of the National League Wild Card Series is set for 2:07 PM/Eastern on Friday, October 7. All games will be televised on the ESPN family of networks.
